Alzheimer Society of Canada - Société Alzheimer du Canada
The Alzheimer Society of Canada, formally known as the Alzheimer Society of Canada - Société Alzheimer du Canada, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to addressing the challenges of Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. Founded in 1978, it is based in Toronto, Ontario, and serves Canadians nationwide.
Mission and Vision
The Society's mission is to alleviate the personal and social consequences of Alzheimer's disease and other dementias, while promoting the search for causes, treatments, and a cure. Its vision is a world without Alzheimer's disease and other dementias, aiming to make significant strides in improving the lives of those affected by these conditions.
History
Initially conceived in 1977 by a group of researchers concerned about the lack of support for people with Alzheimer's, the organization was federally incorporated the following year. It became part of Alzheimer's Disease International in 1984 as one of its founding members. Over the years, the Society has expanded its focus to include family support, education, and research. In 1989, the Alzheimer Society Research Program was established to fund research projects. Since 2003, individuals living with dementia have been included on the Society's board of directors and in its advisory groups.
Initiatives and Contributions
In 2010, the Society released "Rising Tide: The Impact of Dementia on Canadian Society," a report highlighting the health and economic burden of dementia in Canada. It also developed guidelines for person-centred care in care homes starting from 2011. One of its most notable achievements was the launch of the Canadian Charter of Rights for People with Dementia in 2018, written by and for those living with dementia to address stigma and advocate for fair treatment.
Structure and Values
The Alzheimer Society of Canada places individuals with dementia at the center of its activities, focusing on health promotion, advocacy, and support services for them and their care partners. The organization emphasizes values such as passion, inclusivity, excellence, and leadership in its operations.
Partnerships and Impact
The Society works closely with various stakeholders, including government and nonprofit organizations, to advance dementia care and research. It continues to be a leading voice in Canadian society, raising awareness about the impact of Alzheimer's disease and advocating for improved support systems.
Registration Details
The Alzheimer Society of Canada is registered as a nonprofit organization with a Business Registration Number of 118784925RR0001.
Current Activities
Today, the Society continues to support research, provide educational resources, and advocate for policies that benefit those affected by dementia. Its efforts aim to enhance the quality of life for individuals with Alzheimer's disease and other dementias, making them integral members of their communities.
