History

It became part of Alzheimer's Disease International in 1984 as one of its founding members. Over the years, the Society has expanded its focus to include family support, education, and research. In 1989, the Alzheimer Society Research Program was established to fund research projects. Since 2003, individuals living with dementia have been included on the Society's board of directors and in its advisory groups.

Initiatives and Contributions

In 2010, the Society released "Rising Tide: The Impact of Dementia on Canadian Society," a report highlighting the health and economic burden of dementia in Canada. It also developed guidelines for person-centred care in care homes starting from 2011. One of its most notable achievements was the launch of the Canadian Charter of Rights for People with Dementia in 2018, written by and for those living with dementia to address stigma and advocate for fair treatment.
