INDEPENDENT LIVING HOUSING SOCIETY OF GREATER VICTORIA
Independent Living Housing Society of Greater Victoria
The Independent Living Housing Society of Greater Victoria (ILHS) is a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting adults with diverse abilities in living independently. Established in 1976, the society offers accessible housing and support services throughout the Greater Victoria area in British Columbia.
History
ILHS was founded by a group of residents from the Extended Care Unit of the Gorge Road Hospital. Their goal was to create supportive housing that would enable people with physical and cognitive disabilities to live independently and with dignity in the community.
Mission and Services
The society promotes the belief that adults with diverse abilities can lead fulfilling, independent lives when provided with appropriate support and accessible living environments. ILHS provides both respite and long-term housing options tailored to meet the needs of its tenants. The services include residential support that helps tenants manage daily living activities while fostering autonomy.
Accreditation and Quality Assurance
Since 2005, ILHS has maintained a CARF Three-Year Accreditation, reflecting its commitment to high standards in service delivery and organizational management. CARF (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities) is an independent nonprofit organization that evaluates service providers supporting people with disabilities to ensure quality and continuous improvement. Every three years, CARF surveyors review ILHS's compliance with residential operation standards and help enhance the quality of care and support offered to tenants.
Impact and Community Role
ILHS's housing and support services enable people with disabilities to maintain and enhance independent lifestyles in a respectful and empowering environment. The organization is recognized for fostering strong relationships between residential care workers and tenants, creating a caring community atmosphere.
