THE STREET HAVEN AT THE CROSSROADS

The Street Haven at the Crossroads

The Street Haven at the Crossroads is a Canadian nonprofit organization based in Toronto, Ontario, dedicated to supporting women experiencing or at risk of homelessness. Founded in 1965, it operates as a multi-service agency providing comprehensive and integrated support services.

History and Mission

Peggy Ann Walpole, a nurse at St. Michael's Hospital in the 1950s, established Street Haven in response to the widespread plight of women she encountered who lacked safe places to go after being discharged from healthcare facilities. The organization's mission is to deliver supportive services that empower women to achieve stability and independence.

Services

Street Haven offers a range of services designed to address the diverse needs of its clientele:

  • Emergency Shelter: Provides immediate refuge, meals, clothing, medical care, counseling, and other essential resources to women facing homelessness. The shelter has a capacity of 50 beds and serves a significant number of clients annually.

  • Supportive Housing: Street Haven operates supportive housing accommodations for 32 women across three locations in downtown Toronto, offering tailored support based on individual needs.

  • Addiction Services: Offers a 3-month intensive treatment program for women or individuals identifying as women, aged 24 and up, who are experiencing addiction-related challenges.

  • Learning Centre and Training Services: These include free educational and pre-employment programs designed to enhance employability and foster personal development.

  • Outreach and Support Services: Community outreach initiatives ensure that assistance is available to those in need, beyond the confines of physical facilities.

Recognition and Operations

Street Haven is recognized as a registered charity by the Canada Revenue Agency and is noted for its transparency and efficiency. It is classified as a 4-star charity by Charity Intelligence Canada, highlighting its strong financial management and results reporting practices.

In its operations, Street Haven strives to create an inclusive environment that empowers women to grow and thrive, providing not just basic necessities but also opportunities for personal and professional growth. The organization's comprehensive approach to addressing homelessness, poverty, mental health, and addiction has positioned it as a vital resource for women in need.
