Terrace Child Development Centre Society

The Terrace Child Development Centre Society (TCDC) is a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting children with special needs and their families through a comprehensive range of therapeutic, educational, and support services. It operates primarily in Terrace, British Columbia, and was established in 1974 by a group of concerned parents and community members focused on early intervention and developmental support for children.

History and Mission
Founded in 1974, the Society has been serving the community for over four decades, aiming to help children grow and thrive through family-centred practices. Its mission emphasizes recognizing families and primary caregivers as experts on their children, involving them in setting and achieving personalized goals. The organization is committed to providing resources, education, and therapies tailored to the unique needs of each child and family.

Programs and Services
TCDC offers a variety of government-funded programs free of charge (except for the Preschool program), adhering to Family Centred Early Intervention Principles. Services are delivered at two main locations: the Family Connection Centre and the Park Centre.

At the Family Connection Centre (Eby location), the programs include:

  • Occupational and Physical Therapy
  • Speech and Language Therapy
  • Infant Development Program
  • Preschool Program
  • School-age Therapy

At the Park Centre location, focus areas include:

  • Breastfeeding Support
  • Family Visiting Program
  • Fathers' Program
  • Pregnancy Outreach
  • Parental Mental Wellness

Annually, the Centre assists over 300 young children and their families, offering a range of supports from prenatal resources to ongoing therapy and family education.

Funding and Donations
TCDC is a registered charity (Business Registration Number: 119210458RR0001) and relies on a combination of government funding and community donations. Donations help provide resources such as toys, therapy equipment, and support materials for prenatal and early intervention programs, enhancing the quality and reach of its services.

Community Engagement and Values
The Society respects and maintains the privacy of its clients, recognizing the traditional territory of the Tsimshian Nation where it operates. It emphasizes confidentiality and the importance of culturally respectful service delivery. Collaboration with community services and stakeholders is central to its family-centred philosophy.

Accreditation and Recognition
TCDC has been accredited since 2005 and is recognized for quality service provision in child development and family support.

The Terrace Child Development Centre Society continues its commitment to improving developmental outcomes for children in the Terrace area by providing comprehensive support tailored to the needs of children and families within a nurturing and inclusive environment.
