Trinity Place Foundation of Alberta
Trinity Place Foundation of Alberta (TPFA) is a Canadian nonprofit organization established in 1974, focused on providing government-subsidized housing for low-income, independent seniors aged sixty and older in Calgary, Alberta. Over the span of nearly five decades, TPFA developed into the city's largest provider of self-contained seniors' housing, responding to the diverse needs of its clientele, many of whom are previously marginalized individuals benefiting from additional social supports[1][2].
History and Mission
Founded in response to a rising need for safe, affordable housing for seniors in Calgary’s inner city, TPFA has maintained a commitment to supporting independence, dignity, and quality of life for its tenants. The organization emphasizes the importance of both stable housing and health in senior wellness, striving to offer a secure environment connected to a network of services that help seniors live fulfilling lives despite changing needs as they age.
Its philosophy centers on promoting self-determination and well-being, addressing issues affecting health and quality of life proactively, and minimizing social isolation and vulnerability among seniors[1][2].
Services and Programs
TPFA manages multiple housing units throughout Calgary, providing subsidized accommodations tailored to low-income seniors. The foundation also raises funds to support programming supplies, services, and equipment aimed at enhancing social health and recreational activities for its tenants, thereby contributing to their overall wellness[3].
As a recognized Housing Management Body under the Alberta Housing Act, TPFA operates in compliance with provincial regulations, including tenancy laws, ensuring governance structures that protect tenant rights and housing standards[2].
Challenges and Transition
Despite its longstanding role, TPFA faced significant operational challenges in recent years. In 2024, following an operational review and numerous tenant complaints about maintenance issues, safety concerns, financial transparency, and responsiveness, the Alberta government intervened. The concerns included structural problems in buildings, accessibility issues, and delays in maintenance responses, affecting tenant well-being and safety.
Consequently, the government rescinded TPFA's status as a housing management body for 16 properties encompassing about 1,500 senior housing units. Management responsibilities were transferred to other nonprofit operators, namely Calgary Heritage Housing, Onward Homes Society, and Silvera for Seniors, effective March 31, 2025. This action aimed to prioritize tenant safety and improve housing management standards in these communities[4][5].
Organizational Values
Throughout its history, TPFA has upheld values such as compassion, fairness, equality, community, integrity, and respect for individual contributions. The foundation has positioned itself as an advocate for seniors, implementing innovative programs to support marginalized populations and foster healthy aging "in the right place"[2].
This article summarizes the mission, history, services, and recent developments concerning the Trinity Place Foundation of Alberta, a key provider of affordable seniors' housing in Calgary.
