HOSPICE NORWOOD
Our Mission: To provide compassionate care in our rural community for those living with life-limiting illnesses while offering a support system for those caring for loved ones and those experiencing grief and loss.
Hospice Norwood
Hospice Norwood is a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to providing hospice care and support to individuals and families in Norwood and the surrounding rural communities. The organization was established in response to a recognized need for more support services for those dealing with life-limiting illnesses and grief in rural areas.
History
The initiative for Hospice Norwood began in 2016 when a group of community members came together to address the lack of hospice care services in their region. This group conducted research and visited other hospices in the province to understand the requirements for establishing such a service. The family of JJ Stewart generously donated their former home, which has since become Stewart House, the central facility of Hospice Norwood. The community further supported the effort by raising funds for renovations, making the space accessible and welcoming.
Development and Partnerships
In 2023, the Ontario Government provided funding to enhance accessibility at Stewart House, improving facilities such as ramps and washrooms. Additionally, Hospice Norwood partnered with Hospice Peterborough to expand their programming for clients facing life-threatening illnesses, caregivers, and those experiencing grief. The partnership has allowed for a broader range of services and support in Norwood.
Objectives and Future Plans
Hospice Norwood aims to construct a new wing with a 2-bed hospice residence, providing end-of-life care for individuals in their last days or weeks. The organization is actively fundraising to support this development project, which will further enhance its community residential hospice services.
Volunteer Program
Volunteers play a cornerstone role at Hospice Norwood. All volunteers who interact with clients undergo a comprehensive 30-hour training program, ensuring they can provide compassionate and skilled support.
Programs and Services
Hospice Norwood offers various programs tailored to meet the needs of individuals with life-threatening illnesses, caregivers, and those navigating grief. These programs aim to provide emotional support, practical assistance, and educational resources.
Hospice Norwood is registered as a charity in Canada, and its mission focuses on enhancing the quality of life for its community members.
