Georgian Bay Native Friendship Centre Inc.
The Georgian Bay Native Friendship Centre Inc. (GBNFC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to serving the urban Indigenous community in the Midland/Penetanguishene area, encompassing Midland, Tiny Township, Penetanguishene, Port McNicoll, and surrounding villages. The Centre is a member of the Ontario Federation of Indigenous Friendship Centres (OFIFC).
History
GBNFC was incorporated on July 5, 1984, and became a member of the OFIFC on October 20, 1984. Its founding directors included Roger Jackson, Charles Tobey, Rita C. Morin, Frederick Jackson, Rodney Monague, Bruce Marsden, Flora Tabobondung, and Mildred Deschamps[2]. Initially operating through fundraising and volunteer efforts, the Centre overcame significant challenges, including governance and financial issues in the late 1990s and early 2000s[3].
Transition to Success
By the late 2005, the Centre underwent significant changes in governance, leadership, and fiscal management, leading to a period of steady growth and stability. This restructuring included amending by-laws, policies, and procedures, as well as resolving outstanding legal matters[3].
Programs and Services
The GBNFC offers a wide range of programs and services designed to support the Indigenous community. Key programs include:
- Akwe:go and Apatisiwin (Employment and Training Program)
- Children Who Witness Violence Program
- Indigenous Mental Health and Wellness Program
- Indigenous Courtwork Program
- Healing and Wellness Coordinator Program
- Healthy Kids, Healthy Living, and Life Long Care Programs
- Kizhaay Anishinaabe Niin Program
- Reaching Home Program
- Urban Programming for Indigenous Peoples
- Wasa-Nabin and Youth Life Promotion Programs
These programs aim to provide cultural, educational, health, and legal support to Indigenous individuals and families in the region.
Mission
The Centre focuses on promoting mental health, ending family violence, and providing essential support services such as mental health and addiction support, referrals, and document assistance[4]. Through community-based initiatives, including workshops, cultural ceremonies, and annual awards for Indigenous students, GBNFC plays a vital role in strengthening urban Indigenous communities.
