Richmond County Historical Society
The Richmond County Historical Society (RCHS) is a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the history of Richmond County, Quebec, and surrounding regions. Registered under the business number 119118834RR0001, the society was founded in 1965 to commemorate the 165th anniversary of pioneer Elmer Cushing’s arrival in the area[5].
History and Mission
Established as an initiative by the Richmond County Women’s Institute, the RCHS aims to “discover and rescue historical records” while conserving documents critical to understanding the region’s past[5]. Its activities expanded to include archival preservation, genealogical research, and public education through exhibitions and events[5].
Museum and Archives
Operating a seasonal museum in a 170-year-old former Presbyterian manse, the RCHS showcases 19th-century furnishings and artifacts donated by the community[2][3]. Guided bilingual tours are offered, alongside group visits for schools and organizations[3]. The society’s archives, relocated to Melbourne Township Town Hall in 1998, contain historical documents, photographs, and genealogical records, accessible year-round by appointment[5].
Programs and Initiatives
The RCHS organizes themed exhibitions highlighting Scottish, Irish, New England, and French Protestant heritage, among others[5]. It also publishes bilingual historical calendars featuring early railroads, churches, and local pioneers[5]. In 2012, to mark its 50th anniversary, the society constructed a time capsule vault near the town hall, designed to preserve community artifacts for future generations[1].
Membership and Activities
Membership drives and public events encourage community participation[1]. Historical reenactments, lectures, and seasonal programs emphasize regional heritage, supported by volunteer contributions and archival researchers[4][5].
