Multicultural Council of Saskatchewan
The Multicultural Council of Saskatchewan (MCoS) is a provincial, non-profit charitable organization dedicated to promoting, fostering, improving, and developing multiculturalism within the cultural, economic, social, and political spheres of Saskatchewan, Canada. Established in 1975, MCoS is committed to achieving equality for all residents of the province and enhancing the survival, strength, and prominence of diverse ethnocultural communities[1][2][3][5].
History and Mission
Founded in Regina on November 22, 1975, MCoS has served as a cultural advocacy leader in Saskatchewan for over four decades. The council played a role in the creation of the provincial motto, “From Many Peoples Strength” (Latin: Multis e Gentibus Vires), which symbolizes the province’s commitment to diversity and multiculturalism[3]. Throughout its history, MCoS has worked to raise awareness about the benefits of cultural diversity and the dangers of racism.
Activities and Programs
MCoS supports its member organizations through various initiatives, including workshops, financial investments, networking opportunities, and providing information to promote multiculturalism and combat racism. It acts as the lead voice on multiculturalism in Saskatchewan and supports anti-racism and multicultural education programs in schools[1][4].
The organization celebrates and promotes significant cultural observances such as:
- Saskatchewan Multicultural Week (November)
- African-Canadian Black History Month (February)
- International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (March 21)
- Hispanic Heritage Month (April)
- Asian Heritage Month (May)
- National Aboriginal History Month (June)
- Celebrate Canada (June 21 to July 1)
- Islamic History Month (October)[1]
An important event hosted by MCoS is the Multicultural Honours, organized in partnership with the Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan. At this event, awards recognize individuals—both adults and youth—who contribute significantly to multicultural work and help build welcoming and inclusive communities[1].
Educational Resources and Partnerships
MCoS produces and distributes educational materials to schools and community organizations to foster understanding and respect for cultural diversity. One notable resource is Building Welcoming Communities, which supports multicultural education across the province[1][3].
The council also participates in collaborative projects, such as the We Are SK public service announcement initiative, which promotes themes like cultural understanding, inclusion, and overcoming discrimination. This project involves partnerships with seven organizations and is supported by the Ministry of Parks, Culture and Sport[3].
Membership and Advocacy
MCoS offers different types of membership to individuals and organizations committed to multiculturalism. Members include thousands of volunteers who actively promote the council’s mission and values. The council stands as an advocate for multicultural values, collaborating with governments, other organizations, and schools to support and coordinate multicultural activities and anti-racism efforts province-wide[2][4].
Values
The core values of MCoS are rooted in respect for diversity, the rejection of racism, and fostering intercultural connections and integration. The council works to ensure that Saskatchewan is a place where all cultures are welcomed and valued, reflecting the strength derived from the province’s diverse populations[1][4].
