Canadian Chihuahua Rescue & Transport
Canadian Chihuahua Rescue & Transport (CCRT) is a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to the rescue, fostering, rehabilitation, and rehoming of Chihuahuas in need. Established in July 1999, CCRT is recognized as Canada's only national breed-specific Chihuahua rescue organization and achieved national charitable status in 2001.
History and Mission
CCRT was formed by a group of Chihuahua enthusiasts who initially connected through an online chat group and decided to create a formal organization to address the growing need for Chihuahua rescue across Canada. Since its founding, the organization has expanded to include Regional Coordinators and volunteers in every Canadian province, enabling a nationwide effort to rescue and rehome Chihuahuas.
The primary mission of CCRT is to match homeless Chihuahuas with carefully screened, loving adoptive homes. The organization ensures that all placed dogs are spayed or neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated before adoption. In addition to providing direct care for the dogs, CCRT is committed to promoting humane education and responsible pet ownership among the public.
Operations
CCRT operates through a network of volunteers who foster Chihuahuas in their homes while the dogs receive medical care, rehabilitation, and socialization. The organization prioritizes providing extensive medical treatment to dogs in need before they become available for adoption. Potential adopters are screened and supported throughout the adoption process, with follow-up to ensure successful placement.
To support its activities, CCRT conducts fundraising events and relies on donations to cover veterinary care, transport, and other costs associated with rescuing and rehoming Chihuahuas.
Recognition and Status
The Canadian Chihuahua Rescue & Transport is a registered Canadian charity with the business registration number 863993887RR0001. Its charitable status allows donors to receive tax receipts for their contributions, which help fund the organization's ongoing rescue and adoption programs.
Public Engagement
CCRT engages with the community through events and online platforms, including regular updates about adoptable dogs and dogs currently in care. The organization maintains an active presence to raise awareness about Chihuahua rescue needs and to encourage responsible pet ownership across Canada.
This summary reflects CCRT’s role as a nationally coordinated effort to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome Chihuahuas throughout Canada, making it a unique and vital organization within the Canadian animal welfare community.[1][2][5]
