Canadian Bible Society/La Société Biblique Canadienne
The Canadian Bible Society (CBS) / La Société Biblique Canadienne (SBC) is a non-denominational and inter-confessional organization dedicated to the translation, publication, distribution, and encouragement of the use of the Scriptures. It operates without adding doctrinal notes or comments to the texts.
History
The history of Bible distribution in Canada began with the British and Foreign Bible Society in 1804. Over time, various auxiliaries of the British and Foreign Bible Society in Canada merged to form the Canadian Bible Society in 1906. This foundational work set the stage for the organization's current activities, which include translating, publishing, and distributing the Bible in multiple languages across Canada and beyond.
Mission and Activities
The Canadian Bible Society champions the Bible as the voice of God, focusing on the Living Word through Jesus Christ. It leads in the translation, publication, and distribution of the Scriptures, ensuring that the Word of God is accessible to diverse communities. This includes serving young and old, those in prisons and the military, people in Indigenous communities, and recent immigrants.
Structure and Operations
The organization is structured into five regions with ten districts across Canada. Additionally, it operates a French Services Office in Montreal and a National Support and Scripture Translations Office in Toronto. The Bermuda Bible Society is affiliated as an Associate District. The Society's leadership includes a Board of Directors and a Leadership Team, with quarterly board meetings held to ensure governance.
Funding and Impact
Approximately 90% of the Society's revenue is derived from donations, bequests, and annuity income, reflecting the generosity of Canadian supporters. As a member of the United Bible Societies' fellowship, the Canadian Bible Society contributes to a global effort that distributes Bibles, Testaments, and portions of Scripture worldwide. In 2015, this global effort resulted in the distribution of over 418 million Bibles, Testaments, and Portions in more than 200 countries and territories.
Business Registration
The Canadian Bible Society is registered as a nonprofit organization with a Business Registration Number of 118829647RR0001.
Global Partnerships
Through its membership in the United Bible Societies, the Canadian Bible Society participates in international projects and collaborations, extending its reach beyond Canada to thousands of communities around the world.
