SOUTHEY SENIOR CITIZENS CLUB

The Southey Senior Citizens Club is a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to serving the wellness and social needs of adults aged 50 and older in Southey, Saskatchewan. Incorporated in 1978, the club provides a forum for senior citizens to engage in recreational, educational, physical, and social activities aimed at enhancing their quality of life and fostering community fellowship.

History and Development

The club was established and incorporated in 1978 in the town of Southey, Saskatchewan, which is named after the English poet Robert Southey. Since its inception, the club has been located at 132 Keats Street. Over the years, the facility has undergone significant renovations and upgrades. Beginning in 2016, the building was improved with new air conditioning, an acoustical ceiling, vinyl plank flooring, advanced audio/visual equipment including a large screen television and ceiling speakers, and an updated kitchen. Additional enhancements included new windows and blinds, an upgraded wheelchair ramp, a new storage room, and a covered deck. These improvements were funded through various grants such as the Canada 150 Grant, New Horizons for Seniors Grants, Conexus Credit Union Grant, and the Community Initiatives Fund (CIF). The renovation process also actively involved local contractors and volunteers, integrating the club into the broader community revitalization effort.

Mission and Purpose

The core mission of the Southey Senior Citizens Club is to provide an inclusive and non-sectarian environment that supports the welfare of all senior citizens in the community. The club emphasizes respect for the diverse political, religious, and ideological beliefs of its members while working collectively to enhance their physical, emotional, and social well-being. Key strategic focus areas include creating a culture of inclusion, fostering age-friendly communities, combating ageism, addressing issues important to older adults, and raising awareness about older adult abuse and neglect. Particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, the club adapted by promoting inclusion through electronic means to maintain connection among members.

Governance practices include annual general meetings to ensure accountability, report on activities, manage resolutions, elect board members, and present audited financial statements, exemplifying the club’s commitment to stewardship and transparent operations.

Activities and Community Engagement

The Southey Senior Citizens Club offers a variety of recreational pursuits and social outings tailored to the interests of its members, promoting an active and engaged senior community. The club’s programs are designed to enrich the lives of adults 50 years and older through wellness activities, educational opportunities, and social interaction, helping to build a stronger and safer neighborhood through mutual support.

The club has become a central hub for seniors in Southey, fostering community spirit and ensuring older adults have access to meaningful engagement and support services.

The Southey Senior Citizens Club exemplifies how a local nonprofit organization can contribute significantly to the well-being and inclusion of seniors in a small Canadian community through a combination of dedicated governance, community support, and evolving programs that meet the changing needs of its members.
