PORT HASTINGS HISTORICAL SOCIETY

The Port Hastings Historical Society is a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the heritage and history of the Strait of Canso area, including Port Hastings and surrounding communities in Nova Scotia.

History and Purpose

The society was established in 1978 with the initial goal of researching and documenting the history of crossing the Strait of Canso. Over time, its focus expanded to include the construction of the Canso Causeway and Canal, especially in preparation for the 25th anniversary of the official opening celebrations. The organization has since accumulated extensive archives and collections relating to the communities along both sides of the Strait, spanning from Mulgrave to Point Tupper, Port Hawkesbury, and farther along the shoreline.

The society aims to engage, educate, and entertain residents and visitors by conserving the cultural heritage of the Strait area while providing opportunities to deepen understanding of the region's past choices, present circumstances, and future possibilities.

Museum and Archives

Operated by the Port Hastings Historical Society, the Port Hastings Museum and Archives serves as a focal point for showcasing local history. It features exhibits on the construction of the Canso Causeway and its impact on local communities, model ships, early 20th-century lifestyles, railroads, and ferries. The museum offers extensive genealogical archives and materials for research purposes.

Visitors can take personalized tours and explore a variety of displays that bring the region's history alive. The museum also houses a gift shop featuring handmade products by local artisans, including quilters, crafters, and woodworkers.

Location and Community Role

Situated in Port Hastings, the museum overlooks the Strait of Canso and acts as a cultural hub for Cape Breton’s South Coast. The Port Hastings Historical Society supports ongoing efforts to connect the past with the future of the region, fostering a deeper appreciation of local heritage in both the community and tourists.
