The Salmo Watershed Streamkeepers Society
The Salmo Watershed Streamkeepers Society (SWSS) is a Canadian nonprofit charitable organization dedicated to the stewardship and conservation of the Salmo River watershed, located within the Columbia River Basin in British Columbia. Founded with the goal of protecting and restoring the local aquatic ecosystem, SWSS engages in a variety of scientific, educational, and restoration activities aimed at preserving the biodiversity and water quality of the region[1][2].
Mission and Objectives
SWSS promotes awareness of threatened fish and wildlife species in the Salmo River watershed and beyond. The society conducts long-term environmental monitoring, produces scientific research studies, and implements habitat restoration projects. Their efforts focus on ensuring the health of the watershed, including key species such as Rainbow and Bull trout, and addressing the impacts of human activities on natural habitats[1][2].
Key Activities
Environmental Monitoring
For over two decades, SWSS has systematically monitored fish populations, water temperature, and discharge levels in the Salmo River watershed. This extensive data collection supports evidence-based management and conservation strategies to maintain sustainable fish populations and healthy aquatic environments[1].
Scientific Research
The organization undertakes and supports scientific studies that enhance the understanding of the watershed's ecosystem. Research findings inform cautious and evidence-based approaches to habitat restoration and resource management initiatives[1].
Habitat Restoration
Recognizing the ecological importance of natural features such as wetlands for services like flood control and water purification, SWSS actively participates in wetland and river habitat restoration. The organization works in partnership with natural processes to rehabilitate areas impacted by human development, promoting better ecosystem functionality[1].
Education and Advocacy
SWSS offers educational materials and opportunities, especially targeting youth employment and community engagement. The society advocates for environmental conservation and encourages local stewardship of water resources, emphasizing the interconnectedness of watersheds with the broader environment under the campaign "The River Speaks"[2].
Community Engagement
The Salmo Watershed Streamkeepers Society fosters community involvement through events and partnerships, such as collaboration with local organizations to raise awareness about species conservation, including efforts to restore salmon populations in the region. These activities aim to strengthen public connection to local waterways and promote collective conservation action[4][5].

With fishing season underway in the Salmo Watershed we would like to remind anglers that Bull Trout are catch and release throughout the Watershed. The Salmo Watershed Streamkeepers Society have been monitoring water temperatures in the Salmo River mainstem for several years. This data has been used by the Minstry of Environment to enact partial fishery closures when water temperatures reach levels that cause stress to our native sport fish.
