NISHNAWBE-GAMIK FRIENDSHIP CENTRE INC.

Nishnawbe-Gamik Friendship Centre Inc.

The Nishnawbe-Gamik Friendship Centre, incorporated on August 4, 1971, is a Canadian nonprofit organisation primarily serving Indigenous communities in Sioux Lookout, Ontario. It became a member of the Ontario Federation of Indian Friendship Centres (OFIFC) in 1973.

Background

The establishment of the centre was a result of collaborative efforts between local leaders of First Nations and the Rotary Club in Sioux Lookout during the late 1960s. Both groups recognized the need for a social and cultural hub that could serve Native people visiting or residing in Sioux Lookout. This led to a meeting in 1970 that laid the foundation for what initially became the Sioux Lookout Fellowship and Community Centre, eventually evolving into the Nishnawbe-Gamik Friendship Centre.

Programs and Services

Nishnawbe-Gamik Friendship Centre provides a diverse array of community-based and culturally appropriate programs, focusing on social, educational, and cultural development for Indigenous individuals living in urban environments. Key programs include:

  • Akwe:go and Wasa-Nabin Programs: Supporting youth and children through education and nutrition initiatives.
  • Indigenous Mental Health and Wellness Program: Offering resources for mental health and addiction support.
  • Aboriginal Healing and Wellness Program: Fostering healing and wellness practices rooted in Indigenous traditions.
  • Life Long Care Program: Providing long-term care services.
  • Urban Aboriginal Healthy Living Program: Promoting healthy living practices among urban Indigenous populations.
  • Cultural Resource Coordinator and Healing and Wellness Coordinator Programs: Enhancing cultural knowledge and well-being.
  • Indigenous Courtwork Program: Offering legal support services.
Mission and Objectives

The centre aims to improve the quality of life for Indigenous people in urban settings through cultural preservation, education, and social development. It serves as a meeting place for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous community members, fostering understanding and cultural exchange.

Community Engagement

Through a variety of cultural events, including traditional gatherings and meals, the centre helps build bridges between different communities. It hosts community culture nights, offering fellowship and cultural enrichment. Additionally, it supports community events by offering hall rentals.

Business Information

Nishnawbe-Gamik Friendship Centre is registered with a business registration number and operates as a nonprofit organisation, relying on community support and partnerships to fulfill its mission.
