Windsor-Essex Children's Aid Society
The Windsor-Essex Children's Aid Society (WECAS) is a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to providing child protection services and support to children and families in Essex County, Ontario. Established in 1899, it is one of the long-standing institutions in the region focused on enhancing family well-being.
Purpose and Mandate
WECAS operates under the Child, Youth and Family Services Act, 2017 (CYFSA), with a primary mandate to investigate allegations of child abuse and neglect, while providing protective services to ensure the safety and well-being of children and youth. The Society is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors who oversee its mission and objectives.
Services
WECAS offers a range of services designed to support families and children in need:
- Foster Care and Kinship Care: Providing temporary and long-term care arrangements for children who cannot live safely with their biological parents.
- Family Counselling: Offers therapeutic support to help families address challenges and strengthen family dynamics.
- Child Abuse Investigations: Conducts investigations into reports of child abuse and neglect.
- Parenting Courses: Provides educational programs for parents to improve parenting skills.
- Life Skills for Youth: Offers training and resources to help youth develop essential life skills.
- Community Training and Education: Engages in public awareness campaigns to prevent child abuse and promote child safety.
Eligibility and Programs
The services are available to children from birth to 18 years old and their families. Additionally, young adults aged 18 to 23 years can access support through the Ready Set Go Program.
Governance and Operations
The Society relies on a diverse team of staff and the support of foster homes and volunteers to deliver its services. It is funded through the Ontario Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services.
History and Impact
Since its inception, WECAS has been committed to strengthening family units and ensuring child welfare. As part of its historical mission, it continues to advocate for quality services that support children and families in Essex County.
