Timmins Native Friendship Centre

The Timmins Native Friendship Centre (TNFC) is a Canadian nonprofit organization established to support urban Indigenous peoples in Timmins, Ontario. It is recognized as the largest service provider for Indigenous individuals in the urban setting of Timmins, focusing on improving the well-being and quality of life for Indigenous and non-Indigenous people alike.

History and Purpose

The centre was founded in 1974 and was officially incorporated on February 24, 1976. It became a member of the Ontario Federation of Indian Friendship Centres (OFIFC) on October 30, 1982. The founding members aimed to create a supportive environment for Indigenous students coming to Timmins from surrounding communities to pursue their secondary and post-secondary education, fostering positive academic and cultural experiences.

Mission and Philosophy

The Timmins Native Friendship Centre’s philosophy centers on inclusivity and support for all people in the community who seek assistance. It strives to build bridges of understanding between Indigenous and non-Indigenous populations, thereby fostering positive social change and cultural awareness. The centre emphasizes the preservation and promotion of Aboriginal culture and traditions through its programs and services.

Programs and Services

TNFC guarantees a minimum of 50 hours per week of services with an open-door policy welcoming all Indigenous and non-Indigenous people, including Status, Non-status, Métis, and Inuit individuals. The centre offers a variety of culturally relevant programs, which include but are not limited to:

  • Akwe:go – a student nutrition program
  • Apatisiwin – employment and training program
  • Alternative secondary school program
  • Children Who Witness Violence program
  • Indigenous Mental Health and Wellness program
  • Indigenous Courtwork program
  • Cultural Resource coordination

Additional services include advocacy on behalf of clients with various external agencies, translation services, lifelong care support, Aboriginal prenatal support, and court worker assistance.

Regional Impact

While based in Timmins, the centre also extends services to surrounding areas, ensuring accessibility and support for Indigenous populations beyond the city limits. Its commitment to cross-cultural activities and programs promotes a welcoming, inclusive environment that contributes to community cohesion.

The Timmins Native Friendship Centre remains a pivotal organization dedicated to serving the unique needs of urban Indigenous peoples, fostering empowerment, cultural preservation, and community well-being through comprehensive programs and advocacy efforts[1][2][3][4].
