Women’s Enterprise Skills Training of Windsor Inc.

Women’s Enterprise Skills Training of Windsor Inc. (WEST) is a Canadian nonprofit organization based in Windsor-Essex County, Ontario, dedicated to supporting the employment and skill development of visible minority women and newcomers. Established in 1984 and officially opening in 1987, WEST was created in response to the disproportionately high unemployment rates among women, particularly visible minorities, in the region. The organization focuses on providing technical and life skills training tailored to the needs of these women, facilitating their entry into the workforce and promoting self-sufficiency[1][2].

History

WEST was developed after research identified visible minority women as the most disadvantaged group in terms of training and employment opportunities in Windsor-Essex. With initial funding from Human Resources Development Canada, WEST opened its doors in February 1987, offering unique training programs and volunteer placements that have enabled many women to gain employment and move towards personal and professional success[1][2].

Mission and Vision

The mission of WEST is to provide training for severely employment-disadvantaged visible minority women to improve their employability in the workforce or to further their education. Its vision is to be leaders in positioning women for success, emphasizing the enhancement of skills, employment supports, and community integration for newcomer and immigrant women[3].

Values

WEST operates on core values of accountability, professionalism, compassion, empathy, inclusivity, diversity, dignity, and respect. The organization strives to maintain high standards in service delivery and foster an environment that supports the diverse needs of women it serves[3].

Programs and Services

WEST offers a range of programs aimed at skill development, employment readiness, and community integration. These programs are designed to meet both individual and group needs, addressing barriers to employment and supporting women in achieving self-sufficiency. Although the focus is predominantly on visible minority and newcomer women in Windsor-Essex County, WEST’s Employment Services extend to all Ontarians[2][4].

Leadership

Since 1995, Rose Anguiano Hurst has served as the Executive Director of WEST. Under her leadership, the organization has grown to serve more than 2,000 women annually. Rose brings extensive experience in nonprofit program management and is committed to empowering women through skills development and employment opportunities. She is supported by a professional team to ensure the organization meets its goals and the employment needs of women in the community[5].

Women’s Enterprise Skills Training of Windsor Inc. plays a critical role in the Windsor-Essex community by providing targeted training and support to visible minority and newcomer women, helping them overcome employment barriers and achieve economic independence. Through its dedicated programs and compassionate approach, WEST continues to be a leader in fostering inclusivity and empowerment for women in Ontario.
