Cheshire Homes of London Inc.
Introduction

Cheshire Homes of London Inc. is a Canadian non-profit organization dedicated to supporting adults with significant physical disabilities and frail seniors. Since its inception in 1979, it has been working to enable these individuals to live actively, independently, and with dignity within their communities.

History

The foundation of Cheshire Homes of London Inc. began with a meeting in September 1975, where members of the Action League of Physically Handicapped Adults (ALPHA), led by Nancy Skinner, explored the possibility of establishing a small group home in London. This initial concept envisioned a home with five to ten bedrooms, ideally located in the city core. Over the next year, the committee further developed this idea, forming subcommittees for finance and public relations in June 1976. By July 1976, additional members had joined, including Grant Inglis, who drew up letters of patent. The corporation was officially named Cheshire Homes of London Incorporated.

Despite facing a setback when the Ministry of Community and Social Services informed the group that funding would not be available for two years, the Board of Directors remained committed to their vision. They continued to work towards establishing a home, eventually purchasing a property at 534 Princess Avenue in London. In 1979, eight people with physical disabilities moved into this home, marking the beginning of Cheshire Homes' operations.

Services and Mission

Cheshire Homes of London Inc. provides support services aimed at helping older adults and adults with physical disabilities maintain their independence in their own homes and communities for as long as possible. The organization offers assisted living and attendant outreach services across regions including London, Middlesex, Elgin, Huron, Oxford, and Perth counties.

Industry and Impact

The organization operates within the health care and social assistance industry, specifically focusing on skilled nursing facilities and other residential care facilities. Through its dedication to providing supportive living environments, Cheshire Homes of London Inc. plays a critical role in enhancing the quality of life for those it serves.

Governance and Operations

Cheshire Homes of London Inc. is a government-funded organization, ensuring its services are accessible to those in need. The organization's operations are guided by a Board of Directors and executive leadership, with Angela McMillan serving as the Executive Director as of the latest updates.
