Mission

The mission of Action Read is to help adults and families achieve their literacy, numeracy, and other essential skill goals. Programs

Action Read offers a variety of programs tailored to support learners in achieving their goals:

  • Adult Literacy Program:

    • One-to-One Tutoring: Learners receive personalized tutoring sessions, meeting with tutors for at least two hours weekly to focus on individual goals.
    • Small Group Learning: Staff facilitate learning groups, each with a different focus. These include groups such as Diversity Action, For the Love of Words, math, Real Life Writing, Spelling, and Women's Group.
    • Computer-Based Learning: Learners use technology to work toward their goals, often overcoming physical barriers and learning disabilities.
  • Early Start Family Literacy Program: This program is designed for parents/caregivers and preschool-aged children to engage in early learning activities together. It aims to develop early literacy skills and foster a supportive family learning environment.

Support and Funding

Action Read is supported by government and community funders, partners, and individual donors. The organization benefits from the contributions of more than 120 volunteers annually. Additionally, Action Read provides financial support for childcare and transportation to qualifying learners.

Community Impact

Many of the learners at Action Read face challenges beyond low literacy, including poverty, physical disabilities, and learning challenges. The organization's learner-centered approach helps ensure that all participants have access to opportunities tailored to their needs.
