The Brockville and District Ecumenical Care Community

The Brockville and District Ecumenical Care Community is a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to serving the needs and interests of seniors living at home in the Brockville area. Established in January 1979 by a group known as “The Founding Five,” which included both laypersons and ministers, it was recognized as the first seniors centre of its kind in Canada specifically focusing on home-based seniors care.

History

The organization officially launched in April 1980 under the name The Brockville Good Shepherd Centre. Over the next 18 years, it provided a wide range of services with financial assistance from the provincial government. These services included social activities, thousands of Meals on Wheels deliveries, transportation services, foot care, telephone and in-person friendly visiting contacts, home maintenance and home help, social lunches, dinners, dances, and day trips.

As regional government services expanded, provincial funding to the centre decreased. In 1998, the organization relocated its operations to Wall Street United Church and adopted the new name The Shepherd’s Welcome Centre. Despite funding changes, it continued to offer and expand social and recreational activities, trips, and special events with support from fundraising efforts and an annual donation from the Shepherd’s Centre Foundation, established from a generous bequest.

In early 2018, the organization rebranded as the Brockville 50+ Activity Centre. It continues to grow, providing an increasing variety of activities and services to older adults in the Brockville community.

Mission and Services

The Brockville and District Ecumenical Care Community focuses on enhancing the quality of life for seniors living independently by offering social, recreational, and supportive services that encourage community engagement and well-being. Its programs promote active living, connection, and assistance tailored to the evolving needs of its members.

Legacy

This organization holds a notable place in Canadian seniors’ services history as a pioneering model for community-based senior care, demonstrating a sustained commitment to adapting and expanding its offerings for over four decades.
