Manitoba Organization for Victim Assistance Inc.
The Manitoba Organization for Victim Assistance Inc. (MOVA), registered as a charitable organization under Business No. 892750019RR0001, is a Canadian nonprofit established in 2000. Formed in collaboration with the Manitoba Department of Justice, MOVA operates under a mandate to support families affected by homicide, advocate for victims' rights, and collaborate with government bodies to improve legislation and services for survivors.
History and Structure
MOVA originated alongside the implementation of Manitoba’s Victims Bill of Rights (VBR) in 2000. It is governed by an eight-member volunteer board of directors, including individuals who have personally experienced homicide-related loss, Indigenous and Métis community representatives, and members with specialized skills in victim advocacy.
Programs and Services
MOVA provides court accompaniment, parole system navigation, and peer-led support groups for survivors of homicide victims. Its services include group sharing sessions held monthly, alternating between in-person meetings at Winnipeg’s Candace House and virtual sessions via Zoom. The organization emphasizes trauma-informed peer support to address the unique needs of victims navigating legal and emotional challenges.
Advocacy and Public Awareness
MOVA engages in public education campaigns to highlight victims’ rights and collaborates with policymakers to expand protections for survivors. Its advocacy focuses on systemic improvements to compensation programs, victim-centered legal reforms, and accessibility to mental health resources.
Funding and Operations
As a registered charity, MOVA relies on grants, donations, and volunteer contributions to sustain its programs. The organization does not maintain fixed office hours, instead offering flexible access through remote communication channels. Its activities are central to Manitoba’s victim support network, complementing provincial initiatives like the Compensation for Victims of Crime Program.
